about

Guillaume Orti, alto and soprano saxophones
Benoît Delbecq, piano
Joseph Carver, bass
Steve Argüelles, drums and percussions

Compositions by Benoît Delbecq (Sacem).

This band first performed as a quartet at the Blue Room, The Banff Centre, Canada, on July 13, 1990. The four players were participants to the Jazz Workshop led by Steve Coleman. They later met in Paris in 1992 to work on these compositions and record them in Marseille at Studio Cactus. Guillaume Orti and Benoît Delbecq already had founded Kartet with Hubert Dupont and Benjamin Henocq. This is the very first recorded collaboration between Steve Argüelles and Benoît Delbecq, opening a 30 year-long musical partnership.

Paintings Benoît Delbecq's first recording as a leader. It was originally released on Deux Z, a french label from the 90's founded by Catherine Peillon. The track Mob Job by Ornette Coleman (recorded by the quartet at the Banff Center July 13, 1990) was removed from this digital issue for legal reasons, sorry about this.

Benoit Delbecq Paris, France

Multi award-winning Parisian pianist, composer and producer Benoit Delbecq figures among the prominent innovators of the international contemporary jazz scene who have build their own singular language in music. He has brought the soul of jazz to John Cage's prepared piano, when The New York Times depicts him as "a brilliant and unconventional French pianist" (Chinen). Photo by Lukasz Rajchert. ... more
